Lawmakers should be banned from cheating individual stocks because since they are they since they have access to creating law they can manipulate it and create new laws to benefit their company for example they could reduce tax or they could change the amount of tax required to be paid per company profit and net worth which would change the economy, a lot
I think banning lawmakers from individual stocks sounds good, but they could still hide trades or use family accounts. My opponent might be right about trust, but I am not sure a ban fixes much. It just feels like a rule that looks tough without solving the real problem.
additionally, members of Congress have access to non-public information which highly affects the economy and different company assets, which creates a conflict of interest. this conflict is that a law maker’s financial self interest may influence their legislative votes and public policy changes
My opponent makes a fair point about lawmakers shaping laws that could help their stocks. I get that. But I still feel a ban just pushes trading into family accounts or advisors, so the problem stays hidden. I am not sure how to argue past that, honestly.
The negative side said that banning lawmakers from individual stocks would not solve the real problem. while this is true, it could significantly reduce the amount of the lawmakers who are already manipulating their legislative vote for their financial benefit.
Isn't the real problem the information they have, not the trades themselves? My opponent makes a fair point about conflicts of interest, but I still feel a ban just forces trading into the shadows. I'm not sure how to argue past that, honestly.
