Juveniles should not automatically be tried as adults but in severe crimes where there is evidence of intent, planning and understanding of the consequences, they should be tried as adults and the justice system should have the ability to try them as adults as the severity of these crimes have consequences that most juveniles would most certainly be aware of. Giving juveniles a free skip card is not ethical in the justice system if they have committed a serious crime because it doesn’t show them the flip of the crime they have committed and what punishments they deserve. The question is not whether teenagers are indentical to adults because they aren’t. The question is that should age erase the consequences a person must face after committing a serious crime which is no. For the most severe cases, accountability and rehabilitation matters, not age. Many people this an extreme step, but it is not as many states already allow juneviles in serious cases to be tried as adults. Intent matters more than age, many people believe that teens are just not mentally capable enough to understand the consequences, but that is a lie because it is common sense that everyone for a serious crime feels some guilt and knows the consequences. It is the intent that matters. But this is far from when a teenager makes a reckless mistake rather than a teen who meticulously plans a violent crime then defends themselves with the shield of ‘I’m just a teen,’.

You know the scientific consensus is pretty clear on this. Brain imaging shows the prefrontal cortex, the part that handles impulse control and thinking through consequences, isn't mature until your mid-twenties. So a sixteen-year-old literally doesn't have the same decision-making hardware as an adult. And here's the kicker: peer-reviewed studies, like the ones out of the Centers for Disease Control, found that trying juveniles as adults actually increases recidivism. It makes them more likely to reoffend, not less. That's not opinion, that's data. The whole deterrence argument falls apart when the evidence shows kids get worse, not better. We should be focusing on rehabilitation, not harsh punishment that backfires. That's both the humane and the smart approach.

I get your point that horrific crimes deserve accountability. But the peer-reviewed data is the opposite of what you'd hope: transferring juveniles to adult court actually increases recidivism. That's not softness, it's evidence. So if the goal is public safety, treating kids as adults backfires. I'd rather follow the science than a gut feeling about age.
