When people learn all the rules first, they start writing to satisfy the rules instead of following their ear. To me, theory is like a map that can make you forget how to wander. I get the other side says it opens doors, but it still feels like it boxes you in.

But does learning every rule really help someone feel more free? My opponent makes a fair point that theory can help people make music, and I am not sure how to argue back. Still, my gut says too much theory makes playing feel like following instructions.

Maybe my opponent is right that all those combinations are huge, and I honestly do not know how to argue with that. But practically, having endless options can make someone freeze instead of just playing what feels right. My gut still says too much theory gets in the way.

Isn't even a little boost still a nudge away from just trusting your ear? My opponent makes a fair point that nobody uses theory fully, and I cannot really argue with that. Still, my gut says a few rules can make someone second guess what felt natural.

obviously it gets in the way. but it's not about applying all theories, it's about applying one which sounds best to you. and not every theory is useful, most of them are short listed out because of which emotions they invoke. and artists do fall in crative block, after a time, they struggle to make something new. so, music theory will be there to boost them, guide a little to get back on track.

Imagine someone stuck and reaching for a rulebook. My opponent says theory can guide them back, and that is fair. But my gut still says that once you look at the guide, you stop trusting your own ear, and the spark gets smaller.

artists may find two samples equally important, at that time, music theory can help them. falling back to some rules and pre-concieved data help them choose something meaningful. an artist won't be persuaded by some rules, that's why it's called an artist. second guessing is part of being a human, it tells they care about product. many artist who follow their creativity fall from the world because nobody liked it. who will tell them, if it was really good or bad, music theory can help.
