One of them might have an unintended mutation that actually makes her more vulnerable to other diseases. That's not hypothetical, that happened. And the guy went to prison, but the damage is done. Those kids are out there, living with changes nobody fully understands.
You say we can regulate it, but we couldn't even stop one determined scientist. What happens when a dozen countries have different rules? Or when fertility clinics offer "upgraded" embryos as a luxury service? The profit motive doesn't care about your careful regulations. Once we normalize editing embryos for any reason, even disease, we've accepted the principle that we can redesign humans. That line moves faster than you think.
