The other side's hobby analogy sounds fair until you follow the money and the resources. College sports aren't a solo side hustle; they're a system with finite budgets, and most athletic departments already spend more than they earn. If we redirect that into paychecks, the first cuts hit non-revenue sports and scholarships, which is the opposite of sustainability. From an ecological view, paying athletes also accelerates the arms race of bigger stadiums and more travel, not smarter use of resources. I'm not against athletes getting support, but the durable fix is scholarships, healthcare, and degree completion, not turning campus sports into payroll.
