Is the real problem the stock trading itself, or the lack of transparency around it? I get why people want this ban—nobody likes the idea of a senator profiting off insider knowledge. But banning all trading treats the symptom while ignoring the system that creates the conflict.
The thing is, officials are part of the economy too. If we ban them from the market, we push their money into blind trusts or broad index funds, which just creates a different kind of distance—less skin in the game, less understanding of how markets actually work. And the enforcement burden would be enormous. We'd need to monitor every trade, every spouse, every trust account. That's a feedback loop of bureaucracy that distracts from actual ethics reform.
The better path is stricter disclosure, mandatory cooling-off periods, and real consequences for insider trading. Not a blanket ban that punishes everyone for the sins of a few.
