The core problem is consent. True crime turns real deaths and assaults into a product, and the people most affected, victims and their families, rarely get a say in how their worst moments are packaged, titled, and sold. Even when a series claims to honor the victim, the format still depends on suspense and cliffhangers, which means suffering becomes the hook. Some creators do careful work, but the genre's economic engine runs on other people's trauma. Awareness and entertainment can coexist, but not when survivors have to relive their loss for an audience.
