Look at what happens in Goa. They've had a uniform civil code since Portuguese times, and it works fine. Hindus, Muslims, Christians — they all follow the same laws on marriage, divorce, and inheritance. And guess what? No one's rioting. No one's losing their identity. So why can't the rest of India do the same?
I get that people worry about losing religious freedom. But here's the thing — personal laws already treat women differently under different religions. Muslim women can get triple talaq, Hindu daughters used to get less inheritance. Is that really about freedom, or just about keeping old hierarchies intact? A uniform code doesn't have to erase religion. It just sets a basic floor of equal rights for everyone. You can still practice your faith privately.
