Yes. Nihilism is defined by the thoughts in an individual which relates to the idea that existence has no true purpose nor actual ethical morals. Religion allows these ideas to be patched up by introducing foreign morals or values which typically allow for self-improvement in the individual and society as a whole, allowing them to find a supreme goal in life.

Imagine someone sitting alone at night, feeling like nothing matters, then they go to a church service and leave with a sense of purpose. That seems like more than just a distraction to me. I don't know how to prove it, but it feels real.

‘Distraction’ used in this proposal means that even though the person may find a pathway for a purpose in life through religion, the concept of nihilism still exists. Picture this, do you think a fully self-aware 9 year old that has never been introduced to a religious environment would come up with these foreign morals and values, such as those in Christianity or Muslim? It may be true that they have constructed their own through society and its norms, but they do not seek a divine power which will grant them purpose.

I suppose you're right that religion patches over the emptiness. But imagine someone who finally feels less alone. Calling that merely a distraction feels too small. I can't prove it, but it seems like real comfort, not just a trick.
