I keep coming back to Eastern Michigan, which cut four sports in 2020. It shows how fragile athletic budgets are. Football and basketball revenue often keeps every other sport afloat. A full scholarship is already a real package, worth tens of thousands a year in tuition, housing, food, medical care, and coaching. If schools start paying players a share, most would cut sports rather than spread wealth. The stars at a few programs might cash in, but the swimmer or sprinter on the same campus would lose their chance. That is not a fairer system. It is a narrower one.
