I agree that preventing a child from being born with a serious disease sounds like a good goal, and I understand why that would make embryo editing seem worth it. But I don't think having a good goal automatically makes the method safe or ethical. The problem is that editing an embryo can create changes that we may not fully understand, and those changes could potentially affect that person and future generations. There are also other ways scientists can work toward preventing or treating genetic diseases without immediately making permanent changes to human embryos. I think we should continue researching these treatments, but until we know much more about the long-term risks and have strong ethical protections, allowing embryo editing could create problems that we can't undo. Helping children is important, but we also have to make sure that the solution doesn't create new risks for them.

Because of this, the consequences could extend far beyond the original experiment. When the risks involve an entire person's future and possibly future generations, we should be extremely cautious.
Another concern is that embryo editing could eventually go beyond treating serious diseases. If the technology becomes widely available, some parents might want to use it to influence traits such as height, appearance, athletic ability, or intelligence. This could create pressure for parents to genetically modify their children simply because they want them to meet certain expectations. It could also create greater inequality if only wealthy families could afford these technologies. Society could end up divided between people who can access genetic enhancements and those who cannot. Children should not have to be designed to meet a certain standard before they are even born.
Finally, the people being genetically changed cannot give their own consent. An embryo cannot decide whether it wants its DNA altered or whether it accepts the possible risks. Once those changes are made, the person has to live with the consequences. That is why I believe the safest and most ethical choice is to continue researching genetic medicine while keeping human embryo editing prohibited for now. Scientific progress is important, but just because we have the ability to change something does not automatically mean we should. When the potential consequences could affect someone's entire life and future generations, protecting human life and preventing irreversible harm should come first.
