No, universal basic income would not work in a capitalist society. Those who dont work would be getting paid for no reason, and would create a societal norm that is reliant on these very basic income policies much like the generations of Americans who live off EBT for generations. The amount of money needing to be allocated to make this possible would also cost the US millions in taxes with NO meaningful return.

The biggest problem is the cost. Someone has to pay for all that money, and that means either huge taxes or cutting other programs people depend on. I just don't see how we'd actually afford it without breaking something else. Maybe I'm missing something, but it feels too risky.

You make a fair point about people getting too dependent. But my worry is still the money. To pay for UBI we'd have to raise taxes or cut programs that actually help people. I'm not sure how we'd do that without making things worse. It just feels too risky to me.

Imagine a family that gets a UBI check but still can't afford rent because prices go up. That's my worry. If everyone gets money, landlords and stores just raise prices, and we're back to square one. I don't see how that helps anyone.
