I just feel like paying college athletes would basically turn college sports into pro leagues, and schools would end up cutting smaller sports or raising fees for everyone else. That seems like a raw deal for the regular students. I'm not really sure how to argue it better than that.

True, but the athletes would deserve it if they do classes, and also represent their schools. Playing games boosts their popularity and makes the school lots of money when they have people coming in to watch the games and purchase food and drinks, etc

Take a college that suddenly has to pay its star quarterback. The rowing team gets cut to cover it. I get that athletes need money, that's fair, but it still feels wrong to me somehow.

I'm not saying they need to break bank to pay them. Just a decent amount. Like the same they pay children who work part time at the libraries or as Teachers Assistants

Here's a surprising one: most college sports programs actually lose money, not make it. Ren makes a fair point about athletes deserving something, and I honestly can't argue that away. But paying them still feels like it would wreck the whole amateur thing for everyone else.
