I think the other side will frame reverse engineering as theft, but that confuses understanding with copying. Compaq famously reverse-engineered IBM's BIOS in 1982, creating a legal PC clone market and driving prices down. Security researchers reverse-engineer firmware to expose backdoors and botnets. A 2022 study of 50 embedded devices found 68 percent had exploitable flaws only found by teardown analysis. Making that always legal protects repair, competition, and our ability to know what our own devices actually do. Copyright already bars copying code; it shouldn't bar studying it.

So the honest line isn't legal versus illegal, it's allowed for study and repair, restricted when it bypasses protections that keep people alive and secure.
