Social media should not require ID verification, as this is actually intrusive of one’s privacy. Despite your repeated dismissal that requiring ID verification would not be of much worries to our privacy as we are already doing so, you have completely missed the point. The requirement of ID verification in this case is not just shown to one person like a cashier when you are paying for a beer, you are handing your ID to a system here, and you have never met this system before, you do not know who is manning this system, you do not know if you can even trust this system. This is ultimately a social media account that requires ID verification, what if the system has a bug and starts revealing everyone’s personal ID, without that cause a backlash, and now, boom, everyone’s privacy is instantly intruded, are you happy? While you are saying that over 60% of people say that they’ve encountered harassment online and you claimed that ID verification will cut down on these perpetrators actions, now my question to you is this, have you had any proves that ID verification can actually cut down on these perpetrators actions? Also, by revealing the ID of the perpetrators may not necessarily result in them stopping their harassment acts, rather, who in the world knows what they are thinking, they may still commit these harassment acts after their IDs are revealed. Moreover, by revealing the IDs of the perpetrators, we are once again back to the same issue of privacy, we are intruding the privacy of these perpetrators. While they are the ones in fault, do you think, by any means, we should minimally not disclose their identities. This is got to do with a persons will, it is undeniable that perpetrators are humans too, they have their rights that should be protected as well. Morally speaking, we should not disclose someone’s credentials without permission. Moreover, the question here is asking whether social media should require ID verification, your problem on harassment can be solved by other means like increased surveillance, we need not adopt an extreme solution to solve this issue. If by no means, ID verification is required, we should at least make it optional and not compulsory, human rights and free will must still be valued in society today. Everyone is different and we should not force our options upon someone, how would you will if you were the someone who was forced?
