The strongest reason to allow this is simple: your phone is not a suitcase. It holds your medical records, your messages, your photos, your entire private self. The border search exception is meant for contraband, not for rummaging through someone's digital soul. Deleting your own data before a search is the digital equivalent of pleading the Fifth—you're not destroying evidence the government lawfully obtained, you're refusing to turn over your private thoughts. Felony charges for that are wildly disproportionate and turn a routine crossing into a threat. It should be legal to protect your own information.

I am not saying every citizen who goes to the border should have their phones checked, the phone checking happens when there is a cause for alarm or when there is a suspicion, at such times, this privilege to delete data can have very disastrous consequences

and what you are pointing out is an issue of when the checks should be allowed to happen which is a completely different topic
in your example, deleting all of those data in her phone including the protective order and advocate can actually be counterproductive
yes, there should harder rules on when checkings should happen and definetions on what constitutes a cause, but thats a different discussion entirely
what you are saying allows even a terrorist to just delete the data before the warrant arrives if caught
