Thats interesting, but take the origins of Christianity for example, historians and scholars agree that Christianity had humble beginnings (from the ehrmanblog) and was a simple internal Jewish movement. It was funded by an "elite" group of people, rather your ordinary joes. Simply Jesus and his 12 disciples, looking at some of there lives for example peter, he was a simple fisherman, not much of an elite title. And reviewing on your point of "the crowd supplies obedience". It wasnt that simple if we still stick to Christianity, matter of fact Jesus was crucified simply because he "posed" a threat. Whether he resurrected or not is another debate. So simply put, religion wasnt this organized mindset to fool and control people, its simple as what it has been, a simple belief or faith in something that spread through natural preaching.
