I get what you're saying about not ignoring flaws, but I think you're missing something. Some of my best memories are driving with friends, arguing about what a concept album actually means. That debate IS the point. It's not about pretending everything is perfect. It's about creating a world that makes you think differently.
When you say we overrate them, I think you're confusing "overrated" with "ambitious." Sure, some concept albums fail. But when they work, like "The Wall" or "To Pimp a Butterfly," they do something a collection of singles can't. They make you feel like you went on a journey. And yeah, sometimes that journey has bad parts. That's life. Music that represents society should reflect that messiness.
