Remember this summer? Barbie and Oppenheimer had people dressing up, going out in groups, making a whole event of it. That wasn't nostalgia, that was a cultural moment streaming can't replicate. You can't have a "Barbenheimer" on your couch.
You mentioned the health angle and the economics, and those are real pressures. But the pandemic actually showed people crave shared experiences once they feel safe. And the razor-thin margins argument cuts both ways: theaters have adapted before, from talkies to stadium seating. They're experimenting with luxury lounges, event screenings, even themed dinners. The ones that don't adapt will close, sure. But that's not irrelevance, that's evolution.
And yes, some studios skip theaters. But the biggest, most profitable films still open theatrically because that's where the cultural buzz gets born. Streaming might have the data, but theaters have the moment. Ten years isn't enough to kill that.
