Wait—do we really want people whose job is to party, break rules, and sell albums to also be the ones shaping our kids' values? That seems like a conflict of interest.
Look, I get the urge to look up to talented musicians. They make us feel things, they write songs that become part of our lives. But being good at music doesn't mean you're good at life. Some of the most brilliant artists have been total messes—addicted, abusive, or just wildly irresponsible. We wouldn't ask chefs to teach ethics just because they make great food.
I think we're putting an unfair burden on musicians. They're artists, not parents or teachers. Their job is to explore human experience, including the messy, ugly parts. When we force them to be role models, we either sanitize their art or set impossible standards. Let them create. Let someone else be the role model.
