So why are we so quick to take away rights from public officials that we don't take from everyone else?
Look, I get the concern about insider trading and conflicts of interest. But a flat ban on trading individual stocks is a sledgehammer when we need a scalpel. We already have laws against insider trading and strict disclosure requirements. The real issue isn't owning stocks—it's acting on non-public info. Enforce the rules we have instead of punishing everyone for the actions of a few.
Also, think about who we'd be discouraging from public service. Talented people with investments shouldn't have to liquidate everything just to serve their country. That's a huge disincentive. And it doesn't actually solve the ethics problem. A ban might just push bad behavior into less transparent areas.
Better approach? Strengthen blind trusts, enforce recusal rules, and make violations hurt. Not a blanket prohibition that treats every public servant like a potential criminal.
