GPS technology is just another adaptation to help us navigate everyday life. Streets, roads, traffic, it's all become much more complicated than in times where a simple paper map was sufficient. Imagine you're going on a road trip across multiple states in the USA. Simply getting from one state to another can be a simple task. You just follow the highways on the map. However, how are you going to find where that one hotel is, where that rest stop is, where that restaurant or fast food stop is? Maps were helpful on a small scale when small scale was large enough to meet your needs. However, in a rapidly expanding society, GPS is not something we are overly dependent on. If you know the roads, you won't need GPS. It's all a matter of familiarity. You need GPS when navigating unknown situations, and that's okay. Before paper atlases were a thing, people didn't need anything like that at all. When those atlases came out, people were probably saying, we are too dependent on all of these paper maps. It is just how the technology is progressing in our society.

Is there really a difference between "I don't need to know this because I have GPS" and "I can't know this because I stopped using my brain"? Because that's the real issue here. Sure, GPS is great for unknown places—I use it for that too. But the studies show that even when we're going familiar routes with GPS on, our brains stop forming those mental maps. My grandma didn't just know her route; she knew the whole area. That's the skill we're losing.
You say it's just like paper maps, but that's not true. Paper maps forced you to build a mental picture. GPS just tells you when to turn. There's a big difference between a tool that helps you learn and one that does the learning for you. And when that tool fails, we're left completely helpless.

There is a difference between reliance on technology and situational awareness / critical thinking. Not being able to make it to your friend's house in your hometown and not being able to escape a parking lot, that is not an issue of reliability on GPS. In fact, GPS cannot navigate with a small enough spatial resolution to get you out of a parking lot. And your grandmother, she was living in a time where it was sufficient to navigate based on stars and landmarks. In our time, where things have grown so complex, navigating with stars will land you in the side of a skyscraper.

You don't need GPS for routes you go to every week. If you are having that issue, then that is something to work on with being more situationally aware when you drive around. However, I know the way around my neighborhood. I know the way to the places I go to regularly. I have a basic idea of all the roads in my area. At that point, it's up to the person to have the observational skills and be able to register their surroundings. This isn't the fault of the GPS. And I will bring up another point. What about at night time? For at night time, when you cannot see road signs, you can barely see anything except for the road in front of you. Wouldn't it be helpful to have information from a satellite that knows your exact location and can tell you how to get to your destination?
