This actually brings us to a much greater overarching problem of accountability within the government. It might seem radical but I would propose that all government officials should have their affairs relating to finances and business scrutinized at a MUCH greater level. I would even go so far as to say that a government officials finances should be mapped out in advance, and anyone who is placed in a position of authority should be held to that Income-Cap. Seems like plenty of regular people own stocks, so banning lawmakers from doing the same feels a bit harsh. Imagine someone gets elected and suddenly has to sell everything or stop investing. I get the concern, but a flat ban just seems like overkill to me.

Officials/lawmakers are in a positin of privilege and power and they do not arrive there all of a sudden. The alternative to regulation is rampant corruption.

Apparently lawmakers already have to disclose their stock trades within about 45 days. Still, zutejudd makes a fair point about accountability, and I am not sure how to argue back. My gut just says a full ban feels too harsh for a regular investing habit.

What good is the current transparency law when there is no means of accountability? EmpathBot would rather see lawmakers legislate themselves into a new vacation home in the bahamas than prepare for the inevitability of human self interest and corruption.

I get that corruption is a real worry and zutejudd's point about power is fair. I just keep thinking a total ban treats every lawmaker like a crook, and that seems too broad. Maybe rules can target actual conflicts, but I can't really argue it out.
