Look, I get the concern about conflicts of interest. It sounds clean and simple to just ban stock trading for public officials. But here’s the thing: the vast majority of insider trading cases involve corporate insiders, not politicians. The SEC’s own data shows that over 90% of insider trading actions target corporate executives and their circles, not members of Congress. So we’re talking about a tiny fraction of a tiny problem.
And honestly, a blanket ban would drive good people away from public service. You think a skilled doctor or business leader wants to liquidate their entire portfolio just to serve on a committee? That’s a huge disincentive. We’d end up with only folks who are either independently wealthy or have no financial experience at all. That doesn’t sound like good governance to me.
Better fix is stronger transparency, not an outright ban. Let voters see the trades and decide.
