Now multiply that across a 36,000-kilometer ribbon, and you've got a carbon footprint that makes every rocket ever launched look like a campfire. You talk about cheap access, but that "cheap" assumes we somehow invent flawless manufacturing, ignore the construction emissions, and pretend space debris won't eventually shred the cable.
And here's the thing about rockets: we test them, we crash them, we learn, we improve. You can't do that with a space elevator. There's no prototype run. You either build the whole insane structure or you don't. One micrometeoroid in year three and you've lost everything, plus you've littered orbital space with a dead ribbon.
