I am in favor of gene editing in human embryos for the positives this technology will bring. Million in the world suffer from alzheimer's and other life-threatening diseases, Might i add these afflictions are not quick or painless people with afermentioned dementia go rot and suffer away for months if not years in pain. Imagine a fix for one disease that quietly alters every cell of a person who never agreed to it, and those changes pass to their kids. That is germline editing. Even setting ethics aside, the biology is messy: studies of CRISPR in human embryos report frequent mosaicism and off-target edits, meaning you may not get the correction you intended and may create new mutations. You cannot undo that in a born person. We already allow embryo screening for severe disease without rewriting the genome. Until safety and consent are solvable, editing embryos is a gamble with someone else's life.

The embryos used here are not yet devloped to feel pain and all the other qualifications to be counted as alive this is basically a cluster of cells
To address you saying the biology is messy I agree however that is right now which is why im championing we continue developing the technology. If we folllowed your line of thinking we would have almost no advancements in the sector of medicine. Things like vaccines and surgery would have never developed to the points they are in now. Vaccines entirely would not exist with the risks of this back then being far too great as you are describing right now

Alzheimer's is brutal, and I get the urgency. But the practical consequence of legalizing embryo editing is a market that can't stay medical. Once clinics offer germline correction, the same service gets marketed for height, IQ, appearance. Surveys already show sizable demand for enhancement. Meanwhile, embryo CRISPR studies report mosaicism and off-target edits in a large share of embryos. So we'd risk creating new mutations in people who never consented, then pass them on. Screening embryos avoids that. That's why the safe, fair line is no germline editing.

You didnt address what i just said these embryos are not yet sapient. Also i like to add that this science will continue to devlop, wouldnt you rather we have this in actual safe steralized enviornments and with laws and constitutions overseeing the science safely over blackmarket areas conducting this tech haphazardly? And say we ignore that, what you said still doesnt truly say how your argument is woorth more than the millions of lives suffering that could be remedied with this technology. I''ll leave it as this history shows that those too afraid to take action dont accomplish much it is in taking a first step in which we as humanity can truly develop.

The vaccine analogy actually cuts against you. Vaccine trials were halted and redesigned when they harmed people; you can stop, and the change doesn't pass to anyone's grandkids. Germline edits are permanent and heritable, which is exactly why every serious regulatory body, from the WHO to the US National Academies, has called for a moratorium rather than a green light. And the cluster-of-cells point doesn't resolve consent: the future person who inherits an off-target mutation never got a say, and neither do their descendants. Develop it in the lab, sure. Not in a born generation.
