They don’t have the money to afford a huge monetary fine. Teams like Everton have been fined 25million for way lower infringements so there’s would equal a higher amount then the illegal funds and the funds they have. Relegation would be worse for them as their players would leave the club and they wouldn’t be able to build a good enough team to win
To me this is really about whether a punishment should fit the alleged wrongdoing, and relegation feels like throwing a whole club and its supporters off a cliff. A big fine plus other restrictions seems more reasonable than destroying a season, though I admit the other side might have a fair point.
With what money could they pay it with, the sponsors paying the extra money? Relegation would be a fairer punishment. While stricter, you can’t strip 3 prem titles directly and 4 afterwards indirectly and not expect expulsion
Doesn't a fine target the club without wrecking the whole season for fans? My opponent makes a fair point about huge penalties, but relegation still feels too brutal to me. I can't argue it perfectly, honestly, but that's just my gut.
There’s no amount that compensates for all the supporters money merch and costs given up from the clubs losing the trophies. Each club affected is already expected to sue for upwards of 100m so this would push bankruptcy and is way too far
I get my opponent's point that a fine might feel too small for something this serious. Still, dropping a whole club down a division just seems to hurt ordinary supporters most. I can't really explain why, but that feels wrong to me.
