Look, we teach kids how to read, write, and do math because those are foundational skills for navigating the world. Coding is quickly becoming just as essential. It's not about turning every kid into a software engineer. It's about teaching logical thinking, problem-solving, and how to understand the technology that runs their lives. When kids learn to code, they learn to break big problems into small steps, to experiment without fear of failure, and to create rather than just consume. Those are life skills, not just job skills. I get the worry about screen time or adding more to an already packed day. But we’re not talking about hours of drills. Even an hour a week, integrated into math or science, can open up a whole new way of thinking. We owe it to kids to give them the tools to understand and shape their world, not just be passive users of it.

Look, I get the appeal. Everyone wants to future-proof their kids, and coding sounds like a golden ticket. But making it mandatory in elementary school is like requiring every kid to learn Latin because some of them might become priests.
You're missing what elementary school is actually for. It's for building basic literacy, math, social skills, and a genuine love of learning. Forcing coding on every 8-year-old ignores that most of them will never write a line of code as adults. And the ones who are genuinely interested? They're already finding ways to learn it, with or without a mandate.
Not every kid is a natural-born problem-solver in that specific way. Some are artists, athletes, or future history teachers. You can't just jackhammer coding into a curriculum that's already too crammed and expect it to stick. Let's teach kids how to think, not just what to type.
