Should we colonize the Moon before Mars?

The question isn't which destination is more inspiring, but which sequence is more viable. The Moon is three days away; Mars is a minimum nine months. That proximity alone makes it the rational proving ground for life-support systems, radiation shielding, and in-situ resource utilization, with near-real-time telemetry to correct failures. NASA's Artemis program and the recent water-ice detections at the lunar south pole already give us a concrete, cost-effective baseline. We can't skip directly to Mars without field-testing the technologies that keep humans alive beyond Earth. It's simply risk mitigation.

The real question isn't which rock we get to first, but which path actually leads to a sustainable human presence off Earth. The Moon is a barren, airless desert with virtually no accessible water or carbon, meaning any colony there would depend on constant resupply from Earth forever. That's not a stepping stone; it's a resource sink. Mars has the raw materials for self-sufficiency, and that's what matters for long-term survival. If we're serious about becoming multi-planetary, we should go where we can actually live off the land, not where we'll drag Earth's ecological footprint along with us.
