On the first part of the resolution: election day should be a public holiday because, if people are unable to get time off of work that day or something similar, then they simply won’t be able to vote or will have to go in and vote after their working hours, something that is obviously difficult for many. It will also increase awareness and allow more people to know what it is because, when it isn’t a public holiday, people might forget it or not think about it very much. Meanwhile, it being a public holiday it will allow everybody to know that this day is special and what it’s about and things like that. Like, in schools across the United States, students actually learn about the holiday that they’re getting time off for prior rather than simply not going to school that day with little to no understanding of why.
On whether the voting age should be lowered to 16: the voting age should be lowered to 16 given the fact that these are the very people who will be released into society. The results of that election can impact them significantly. It’s also been shown that a 16-year-old voting increases the civic engagement within their family. This means that lowering it will most likely lead to a rise in civic engagement. Overall, a 16-year-old is trusted and able to vote. If they are able to do so many other things, then there’s no reason that they shouldn’t be able to do this simple thing that can impact them so much.
