Take any confirmed scientific result, and you'll find a causal explanation underneath. Deduction, mechanisms, why-tests, all that sort of thing. The telescope analogy is appealing, but it's off. Telescopes extend our senses; they don't make judgments about what's significant. AI does. It's not just seeing, it's selecting its own priors and deciding what patterns count.
Even when AI outputs something validated in a lab, like an antibiotic, that's a useful clue, not a discovery. The validation tells us it works, but someone has to figure out why it works to make it knowledge. Until then, you've got a very smart oracle, not a scientist.
