So I, the affirmative, strongly believe that college athletes should get paid. This is both because they need resources to be able to just make it in. Make ends meet basically. And also I think that it's very important to reward people, especially children for their hard work, for them to keep on doing that. And it's very important, especially when it comes to sports, because a lot of children today are overweight and therefore we need to value and protect the sports that prevent that, in my opinion.

Here's a stat that changes the tune: the NCAA reports that only a small fraction of Division I athletic departments actually turn a profit. Most rely on student fees and school support just to keep the lights on. Sure, big football schools generate huge money, and the other side is right that fairness for the stars is a real note. But system wide pay would force many schools to cut non revenue sports or charge students more, and that's a lot of athletes losing their chance to play so a few get paid. The harmony breaks.

And while that is true, the thing that actually keep the schools running is the students and the athletes and without them they would be generating zero profit. And now they're at least making something or a few schools are making very lot of money and it's important to be able to keep that and not just say, oh, come here for fun. Like these people who are really good at something deserve a reward and something for being loyal to their school and like staying there.

Look at the wave of Division I schools cutting sports like gymnastics and tennis when budgets tighten; systemwide paychecks would accelerate that, not fix it. My opponent is right that hard work deserves reward, and scholarships already carry some of that tune. But fairness for a few stars can't become a system that charges students more or kills non revenue teams. And on the health point, keeping sports affordable and open does more good than turning college teams into payrolls. That's the chord I'd keep.

I completely understand that schools that go minus or like barely goes break even maybe they shouldn't give these huge paycheck but at least a little reward to the athlete. I think that's bare minimum. Like take minimum weight for example for like workers in fast food restaurants. If they deserve that small sum of money I especially think that athletes should too. And like the schools I am specifically talking about most, like the big football schools that generate the big bucks, they should, I think they almost have responsibility to give some of their big fame and credit to their students.
