I get why embryo editing sounds powerful. The idea of preventing devastating genetic diseases before a child is even born is genuinely compassionate, and I don't think anyone who supports it is doing so out of malice. That's the appeal.
But here's where I get stuck. We're not just fixing a single broken gene in a single child. We're altering the shared human gene pool, permanently. Once those edited genes are in someone's germline, they get passed down to their kids, and their kids' kids. That's an irreversible, one-way door with no feedback loop to correct course if we get it wrong. And we will get things wrong, because we don't fully understand how genes interact with each other or with the environment. A change that looks good today might create a vulnerability decades from now, or in a different context we can't predict.
We're also opening a path where "editing out disease" slowly slides into "editing for height, intelligence, or eye color." It's a systems problem, not a simple medical fix, and the unintended consequences are too big to gamble with.
