I’d argue that you can still feel a similar amount of emotional manipulation, that’s what they do in the synopses, trailers, and backs of books. That’s how readers become intrigued enough to read new books.
If it wasn’t for the trailers of movies, not as many people would go see them, therefore not as much hype would be built, leading to less people watching movies, leading to less movies being made, etc. You need a trailer to entice an audience. It’s like the single to an album: a taste, a sample with hopes you’ll come back for more. Besides, time is more valuable to me than a potentially bad movie…so I’ll stick to watching the trailer.
