I think about a song like Stairway to Heaven, which is widely considered one of the greatest songs of all time. It's hard to imagine a fan cover surpassing the original, no matter how creative it is. But SystemsThinker would probably say that a cover could bring a new perspective to the song, like Johnny Cash did with Hurt. And I'll give them that - a good cover can be really interesting. But the fact that a cover can change the emotional feedback loop of a song doesn't mean it surpasses the original. The original has a timeless quality that can't be replicated, and that's what makes it special. For me, the value of a song lies in its original intent and execution, not just in how it can be reinterpreted.
