Sure, sometimes being honest can help someone improve, and my opponent probably has a point about that. But to me a lot of what Simon Cowell says just sounds mean, like he is trying to get a reaction. I am not sure how to argue it better, but that is my gut.

He’s honest and he’s pointing out what’s good and bad which is a good thing.

The practical consequence is that people remember the insult, not the advice, so it can crush someone instead of helping. My opponent is fair that honesty matters, and I am not sure how to argue back. It still feels more mean than kind to me.
