Let's be clear what "paid" means here. If we're talking salaries or endorsements beyond scholarships, I think that fundamentally misunderstands what college sports are supposed to be. These are amateur athletes who are students first. The scholarship they already receive — tuition, room, board — is compensation. It's worth tens of thousands a year. Paying them salaries would turn college sports into a minor league system. That changes the entire purpose of the NCAA. It would create huge disparities between big football schools and smaller programs, and it would put pressure on athletes to prioritize money over education. Most college athletes already get a great deal: free education, training, exposure. Making it professional would ruin what makes college sports special.
