College athletes would benefit greatly from being paid for their sports. Since the emergence of higher education, the privilege of going to colleges and universities have remained expensive and daunting. Even to those who are accepted, student loans, supplies and living costs burden students and student athletes. Seeing as college sports not only require skill, but genuine commitment and dedication, I believe student athletes should get paid.

So what happens to the whole ecosystem of college sports if we start putting price tags on athletes? Right now, it's this delicate balance — scholarships, training, exposure, and a real education. Introduce money, and everything shifts. You'd see bidding wars for 17-year-olds, players transferring mid-season for better deals, and smaller schools getting completely priced out of competition. That's not just a hypothetical, that's a predictable chain reaction.
The system already gives athletes huge value: tuition, room, board, and a platform to showcase their talent for the pros. Pay them, and suddenly you've turned college sports into a minor league with no safety net. Scholarships already cover what most students never get. Messing with that balance hurts way more people than it helps.

While the shift in value is notable, with proper regulations and prevention procedures, just as applied to other leagues, there is more good than harm. Lots of college athletes that are accepted into schools are loaded with heavy debt that they can only alleviate should they make it into professional league, which fewer than 2% do. Allowing them some pay from their sport offers more opportunities outside of their college life, and outside of sports in general.

Did you know that only about 2% of NCAA athletes ever play professionally? For the other 98%, a full ride scholarship is already covering tens of thousands in tuition, room, and board. That's not nothing—that's life-changing money for most families.
I get that athletes commit serious time. But paying them shifts the incentive from getting an education to chasing a paycheck. You'd see players skipping class for training, majors picked for schedule flexibility, and smaller schools slashing non-revenue sports to afford the bidding wars. The whole system tilts.

Only about 1% of all college athletes received a full ride scholarship, so that data isn't as impactful. And yes, while paying college athletes can influence more students to chase a check rather than an education, there are still rules and regulations that would mean an athlete is not only an exceptional athlete, but they are also exceptional students. So while an athlete may apply to college only for the check, at the end of the day they would also be getting a degree and an education, that provides them for more opportunities post college.

You're right that athletes face real financial pressure — I won't pretend that scholarship covers everything, especially for those helping their families. But the fix isn't paying them directly; that just introduces a new set of problems without solving the root issue.
Think about where the money would come from. Only football and basketball generate real revenue. So you're either asking those two sports to subsidize everyone else, or you're cutting the 98% of athletes in lower-revenue sports. Neither outcome is fair. And "proper regulations" sounds good, but we
