This is hardly enough to afford rent an apartment in practical places in California along with healthcare and supporting a family.

I get that people want servers to make a decent living, and my opponent probably does too. But tipping feels like a weird guessing game where pay depends on strangers' moods. I just think the price should cover it, though I am not sure how to argue this better.

Although this is true many minimum wage workers find that net payment just for the prices of the food and services they provide does not put them in a position of good and relatively medium or easy quality of life. A waiter can serve 50 to 250 people in a 12 hour shift let’s say 4/5 of the 250 people served tips two dollars each. That would mean 200 people each tipped two dollars which would mean the waiter would receive $400 from tip tips in one 12 hour shift. if this happens every day for 40 weeks in a year that would mean the waiter would earn 112000 dollars just in tips, which is enough money to afford necessary, healthcare groceries and rent if they save their money appropriately

Maybe my opponent has a fair point that people need enough to live on, and I'm not sure how to fix that. But to me the real issue is that tipping lets employers push wages onto customers, so the listed price is kind of a lie.

The minimum wage is set and has only been going up in the past few decades additionally tipping is a culture and a choice which the customer gets to make. tipping was never designed to be for employers to bring down the minimum wage as that is a government choice and it would be illegal for them to do so. So no tipping culture should not be abolished.
