Think about a city breaking news story, like a gas leak or a protest route. If search personalizes based on your browsing history, someone who reads conservative blogs gets one version of events, someone who reads liberal ones gets another. In a dense city, that's literally dangerous, people make decisions about where to walk, what to avoid, based on different facts. The nut allergy example is fair, but that's what filters are for, not secret algorithms deciding for you. Let the user filter explicitly. But the default should be the same public record for everyone. That keeps search honest.

Think about a subway map. It shows every line, every stop, the same for every rider. A tourist studies it; a commuter already knows her route, and she doesn't need the map to hide all the other stops to be useful. Search should work that way. The surgeon and the med student both get the same baseline results, then they filter, refine, or use advanced tools themselves.
