Why pay for a postcard when you were there? Live albums once served as documents, but streaming archives every tour instantly, from official releases to fan bootlegs. They're often overdubbed anyway, so the live promise is thin. Luminate data shows live albums pull a tiny fraction of on-demand streams compared with studio records; listeners skip the 12-minute drum solo. The concert's value is presence, not a reproducible file. If you want the memory, a playlist of the actual setlist does the job. So yes, in the streaming era, they're mostly pointless.

I get why people call live albums redundant. Imagine a commuter who's never seen a favorite band live. They open Spotify, play a live album, and suddenly hear the crowd, a stretched outro, a raw vocal. That's not pointless; that's a different document. Streaming doesn't erase live records, it makes them easier to find. Sure, studio versions are cleaner, and not every live album is essential. But the best ones capture a night that can't be recreated, and streaming lets that night reach people who weren't there. That's value, not redundancy.

I'd say the live album is the worst of those options: no visuals, often overdubbed, locked to one night's tracklist. Lerafox says the interpretation matters. Fine. But streaming floods us with every interpretation ever recorded. The album as a packaged document is redundant. Luminate's numbers just confirm listeners already know it. The night is the product. The file is a souvenir nobody needs shipped.

Calling the commuter's experience "secondhand" doesn't make it pointless, either. Most music we hear is secondhand. And a fan recording isn't interchangeable with a proper live mix; one's a blurry memory, the other's a document. Fair on overdubs, plenty are plastic. But low streams just mean most live albums are forgettable, same as most studio albums. Rarity isn't pointlessness.
