15% of the American GDP is wasted on the current healthcare system in America. Meanwhile, other developed nations are able to provide their citizens with free healthcare by spending 8% to 10% of their GDP. In America hospital fees often reach into the millions for ordinary treatments. An example is a mother birthing twins, she could easily be charged $10M just for giving a risky birth and requiring extra treatment. A man in the ICU could be charged $6.5M for a 4 month stay. For some reason, health insurance will actually negotiate and pay these prices. As healthcare currently stands in America, the patients in my example will likely pay $10K out of pocket, then have insurance cover the remaining $6.49M or $9.99M. Meanwhile, in other developed nations, less than 10% of GDP is used to provide the entire country with easy access to free healthcare. They still have the option for private health insurance, but as a luxury, not a requirement. Another thing these other countries have are incredibly reasonable fees, designed to use dollars appropriately to fund the operating costs of the hospital. In America these fees are predatory and designed to destroy a person's life if they are not buying into the corrupt system that exists to charge people in need millions of dollars for ordinary treatments.
