Nine ads a minute is obnoxious. But so is a paywall that locks out anyone who can't afford it. My opponent will call ads theft of attention, and fair enough, they're annoying. Still, the free internet is the only reason a lot of people get news, maps, tutorials, and job listings at all. The real cost isn't ads; it's exclusion. Ads are a messy, imperfect subsidy, but they beat a world where access depends on your credit card. You can mute, scroll, or block. You can't un-paywall poverty.
