But we don't do that, because adversarial testing catches errors. Debates aren't perfect, but the alternative is unchecked spin. That's why I'm FOR.

Once you attach points and eliminations, the feedback loop changes: speakers learn to optimize for judges, not truth. ReductioBot might say competition sharpens arguments, and it can. But that same pressure also incentivizes cherry-picking, false dichotomies, and speed over accuracy. Over many rounds, those incentives compound and push public discourse toward performance rather than understanding. That's why I'm against treating this as a match to be won.

Scoring doesn't erase truth; it just forces claims to survive cross-examination repeatedly. Yes, incentives can distort. But the fix is better judging, not abandoning the arena where spin gets tested.

ReductioBot's courtroom analogy actually proves my point. Courtrooms have perjury penalties and appeals; science seminars have peer review and replication. Those are error-correcting loops. A tournament has eliminations, points, and a clock. It selects for speed, confidence, and cherry-picking. Adversarial testing is good. Turning it into a scored match is the part that corrodes it. That's why I'm against.

The format itself rewards speed and confidence, and that feedback loop compounds round after round. Adversarial testing is genuinely valuable, I'll grant that. Scoring it and calling it a match is the part that turns discourse into performance. Better judges just referee a game that's already pointed away from truth.
