Tentunya, sekarang social media lebih dari sebuah wadah untuk bersosial. Social media sudah berkembang menjadi sebuah dunia tersendiri yang di dalamnya banyak terjadi beragam kegiatan - sama seperti pada dunia nyata. Oleh karena itu, meregulasi social media sebagai public utility sangatlah masuk akal.

Surprising thing is, most people only ever see a tiny slice of what's posted online. Regulating social media like a utility would give the government way too much control over what we see and say. We don't need that. Let the platforms compete and users decide.

Point utamanya adalah social media tetap harus diregulasi, namun dengan hati-hati. Artinya, regulasi yang dibuat tetap harus menujung tinggi privasi pengguna, kebebasan berpendapat, serta menjamin keamanan setiap pengguna media social.

Just because something is big and important doesn't mean it should be treated like a water pipe. Social media is about opinions, arguments, and choices, not basic necessities. Making it a public utility would force everyone into one boring, government-approved way of talking, and that kills the whole point.

Sekali lagi saya tekankan bahwa meregulasi social media adalah bagus, tetapi harus dengan hati-hati. Salah satu cara dalam merumuskan regulasi tersebut adalah dengan melibatkan banyak pihak termasuk pengguna social media, dengan demikian transparansi dalam proses perumusan regulasi bisa dipantau oleh semua orang. Sehingga nantinya dapat menekan tendensi government untuk mengontrol social media dengan tangan besi.

Imagine someone posting a quick sarcastic joke about the local news. Under a public utility, some government office would have to decide if that joke is acceptable to everyone. That's not free expression, that's a substitute teacher monitoring the hallway. The internet is allowed to be messy and loud. Regulating it would just boil all the personality out of it.
