Yes, capitalism does lift people out of poverty, but that doesn't mean other economic systems don't do the same thing. Socialism, communism, and mixed economy all can achieve the same goal of lifting people out of poverty, but the difference between capitalism and ones I mentioned is that capitalism can cause extreme inequality in wealth. From the World Inequality Report of 2026, they found that the top 10% makes up about 75% global wealth, where as the bottom 50% barely holds 2% of the global economy. This is what capitalism does, creates huge inequality in wealth.
The difference in wealth doesn't only impact in people's wages, it also impacts inflation in housing markets, food, general wellbeing and even causes macroeconomic growth. Therefore, capitalism creates issues beyond one's self.
A question that should be answered is why capitalism is the best engine even with all the flaws, is it because it lifts people out of poverty, or is it simply better because it benefits people with wealth. But both, as covered earlier, can be resolved simply by changing the economic system to another. My opponent did acknowledge that capitalism isn't perfect, and that there can be fixes, but what would be the fix, and how would that be different from what is already is?
