except using social media is a choice made by the user. If the child is choosing to do that against th school rules, that should be punished. The entire student body shouldnt be punished for a few people doing it

Isn't fairness kind of the whole point of a public utility? You've made good points about phones being useful, and I can't really argue with that. But when a platform controls what millions see, it feels like it ought to have some basic duty to the public. That's just my gut.
