Let’s start with a question: if we truly believe in individual freedom, why do we insist that people must first prove they’re desperate before we help them survive? Universal basic income isn’t just about handing out cash—it’s about removing bureaucratic gatekeeping and trusting people to make their own choices. The current welfare system is riddled with inefficiencies, stigma, and work penalties that trap people in poverty. UBI would simplify that mess into a predictable, no-strings-attached payment.
Critics will say it’s too expensive or that people will stop working. But look at pilot programs—Finland, Kenya, even Stockton, California. People didn’t quit en masse. They started businesses, went back to school, or took better care of their families. The real cost is maintaining a system that punishes the poor for being poor. UBI isn’t a handout—it’s a floor. And a floor doesn’t stop you from building higher.
