The reason this is debatable is because we have failed to have the discussion about what social media is in our lives if we have that discussion the problem becomes a parent with it not being treated and legislative and regulated as a public utility the Internet has a hole is serving as a public square but social media in particular is serving as a connection for social family friends occupational opportunities educational opportunities networking opportunities as well as daily necessities where people are coordinating their lives their futures and their visibility in an economic system that now utilizes social media as a main component for deciding on investment so in order for that to not turn into exploitation which it certainly has it is incredibly important now to begin the process of legislating learning what we have from our other experiences with more obvious public utilities but it only wasn't obvious because it is novel and digital digitized but it is merely a virtual and digitized public Square that is shared globally so we need to have robust understandings of this it just has to be done well the argument isn't if it should be done just how

So we do regulate the water fountains in the public park the safety in the public park the accessibility in the public park the bathrooms in the public park this space being shared means that it has responsibilities to the safety and the well-being of the participants and the interesting thing about social media is unlike a public park we are using these devices in our own homes and neurologically speaking this becomes a hybridized environment where we are forming memories and having important discussions conversation conversations and life-changing event events happen while we have invited this social media landscape into our homes because of how it works fundamentally so it's not quite comparable in some ways and in other ways the comparison is even stronger to the point that this has been an issue of public utility all along

Finding doesn't turn something into entertainment advertisement is not really even relevant here if you're suggesting that we turn it into something more like public broadcasting I wouldn't disagree with that necessarily but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't go more in that direction when private interest are able to dictate what happens to people that is atmosphere that is ripe for exploitation and when people are relying on these bases for their well-being in terms of social connections job opportunities visibility in the way of life that we now exist which is with digital footprints and engagement with others to create audiences for our work this isn't about entertainment this is how people connect to the world
