I get why people worry about conflicts of interest, that seems fair. Still, banning lawmakers from owning individual stocks feels like treating everyone as guilty until proven innocent. Lots of ordinary people own stocks, so it seems odd to single them out. I'm not totally sure, but that's my gut feeling.

The practical problem is a ban would just push trades to spouses or blind trusts, creating a messy enforcement mess without really fixing anything. Your conflict point is fair, and I am not sure how to argue against it, but banning still feels like overkill to me.

This actually brings us to a much greater overarching problem of accountability within the government. It might seem radical but I would propose that all government officials should have their affairs relating to finances and business scrutinized at a MUCH greater level. I would even go so far as to say that a government officials finances should be mapped out in advance, and anyone who is placed in a position of authority should be held to that Income-Cap; spouses and immediate family can be allowed for in the mapping and capping. This argument does not yet address the problem of blind trusts.

Take a lawmaker who owns a few shares in a local utility. Most people can handle that without letting it drive votes, so a flat ban feels like too much. You're right officials have a special role, but I still can't shake the feeling it's overkill.
